TISE congratulates Guernsey sailor who mixed it with world’s best | TISE

The International Stock Exchange (TISE) is congratulating Guernsey sailor Andrew Bridgman who recorded a 12th place finish at the world championships in Melbourne.

TISE has been supporting Mr Bridgman’s quest to win the Foiling Waszp World Championships which were hosted by the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club in Melbourne between 11 and 16 December.

As part of the Great Britain team and sailing under the banner of the Guernsey Yacht Club, Mr Bridgman finished an extremely creditable 12th out of a field of more than 90 competitors from across the globe.

Mr Bridgman said: “I’ve had a great week here racing for the world title. On reflection, 12th was a great result, and although i know there’s a lot potential left untapped, I'll have to wait for the next one to prove it.”

The week of racing opened with two races on the first day, after which Mr Bridgeman lay in 15th place but on the second day, thunderstorms failed to clear and put paid to any racing.

As Mr Bridgman said: “That meant attempting six races on the third day to catch up, which involved four races in my favoured conditions of high winds and big choppy waves. I got a second in one race, but unfortunately, in the other three races, I had a few problems and although I was on course for top three finishes in all those races – including leading one race by 300m – it didn't quite go my way.”

The two remaining races on day three were in light and gusty conditions and left Mr Bridgman in 13th. The last day provided perfect sunny, sea breeze conditions which led to the tightest racing of the regatta and enabled Mr Bridgman to come away with two decent scores and end on a high in 12th place.

Cees Vermaas, CEO of TISE, said: “I’m delighted that Andrew was able to finish in such a strong position. The whole team at TISE sends him huge congratulations for taking on such a big challenge, coping with the conditions out in Melbourne last week and producing a great result. It’s a great story and he’s a great ambassador for Guernsey and so I look forward to catching up with him in person when he’s back in the island.”

Mr Bridgman qualified as an actuary but has paused his career to focus on training for the world championships. TISE has provided financial support to Mr Bridgman which has gone towards the costs of competing in Australia, including his boat, other equipment, and coaching in Melbourne, as well as travel and accommodation.

"The whole team at TISE sends him huge congratulations for taking on such a big challenge... and producing a great result."
